Canon!
Curated by Hymodernity
A realignment in four parts, Canon! explores the potential and the possibilities of an evolutionary Now.
Through fragments and the whole – work which is presented in a group show and in solo exhibitions – Canon! looks to disrupt the established biases, redefining its namesake in the burgeoning age of Digital Art and our current moment of tectonic change.

Petra Cortright joins the launch of Hymodernity with a solo presentation. American Spirit Usual Hell is a series composed of 10 NFTs that are a continuation of the paintings recently exhibited at Société, Berlin. Her solo show BALEAF GYS AKADEMIKS maamgic BROKIG (11 November 2021 — 8 February 2022) at the German gallery forms the visual basis of the work deve- loped for Hymodernity. As in the paintings, Cortright’s focus is her native landscape, a homage to the Californian arid surroundings and their palette.
The American West is in this series of NFTs a dreamlike space with a metaphysical feeling. While referring to typical natural elements, shapes and colours hellishly flare floating on the centerless surface. The NFT format maintains her signature style with the combination of heavily distorted images, both ‘found’ on the internet and taken with a phone camera, and digital paint strokes. The animation allows additional layers of meaning. The everchanging and pulsing elements are an insight into the creative process and the endless possibilities of digital manipulation.
American Spirit Usual Hell is a neurotic postcard of the American landscape that portrays the perpetual cycle of nature and the coexistence of opposing dichotomies, light & darkness, flames & water, natural & artificial.
